Day of Mindfulness Feb. 11, 2017: Description

How do we respond to the anger, fear, and distrust that characterizes much of American civic discourse? How can we work together to transform it and reduce the suffering in our society and in the world? At our February 11 Day of Mindfulness in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, Dharma Teacher Jack Lawlor will explore how sitting meditation, walking meditation and other mindfulness practices can provide a healing refuge in fast-paced, disorienting times. These same practices enable us to look more deeply, listen more carefully, and better understand what’s best in one another and how to work together instead of living in isolation and misperceiving one another’s intentions.

The Day of Mindfulness will include instruction in meditation in the tradition of Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh, sitting and walking meditation in silence, a silent lunch, and mindful discussion of the role of contemplative living and practices in these troubling times.|

Jack Lawlor
was ordained as a Dharma Teacher by Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh in a Transmission of the Lamp Ceremony in Plum Village, France in 1992. Jack has been practicing Zen meditation consistently in organized meditation groups since 1974. He has served as the President of the Buddhist Council of the Midwest in Chicago, on the national Board of Directors of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship, and on the Care-Taking Council of the U.S. and Canadian Dharma Teacher’s Association in Thich Nhat Hanh’s tradition. He is also a co-founder of Lakeside Buddha Sangha in Evanston, Illinois, which just celebrated its 25th year. Jack has also worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has been involved in many political campaigns and environmental initiatives in Illinois, Wisconsin and elsewhere. Jack has been married over 42 years, and has two adult children and four grandchildren ages 7 and under.

The DOM and will be held in the School House and on the grounds of Simply Dunn, Downsville, Wisconsin, Located above the beauty of the Red Cedar River bottoms, Simply Dunn is a community center and nature preserve where owners and sangha members John Thomas and Kathy Ruggles invite us “to take a deep breath and let go.”
